The two investment routes to Argentine citizenship

The main applicant chooses between a non-refundable contribution to the National Treasury and the subscription of a government bond created for the programme. Here is what each route involves, based on the official announcement of 2 October 2026.

Investment routes

USD 350,000 · Non-refundable contribution

A direct contribution to Argentina’s National Treasury.

  • USD 350,000 for the main applicant.
  • Announced as non-refundable: it is not an investment that can be sold or recovered.
  • Family members add the announced amounts for their category.
  • Paid only through the formal financial system and the official channel, once published.

USD 800,000 · Government bond

Subscription of a public bond created specifically for the programme.

  • USD 800,000 for the main applicant.
  • It is capital invested in a bond, not a fee. Not every Argentine bond qualifies.

The non-refundable contribution

The contribution route involves a direct payment of USD 350,000 by the main applicant to the National Treasury. The announcement describes it as non-refundable: from a legal and accounting point of view it is a definitive transfer to the State, not an asset that remains in the applicant’s estate.

Its advantages are simplicity and certainty about the amount. Its main disadvantage is evident: if the application is refused, or if the legal basis of the programme is affected by a court decision, nothing has been announced about refunds. For this reason, the moment of payment within the procedure is a key point that the implementing rules will have to clarify — for example, whether payment is made before or after a preliminary favourable evaluation.

The government bond

The bond route involves the subscription of USD 800,000 in a public bond “created specifically for the programme”. Unlike the contribution, the money is invested in a security: in principle it remains an asset of the investor, but its real economic value depends entirely on conditions that have not yet been published.

Before choosing this route the following must be known: maturity date, interest rate (if any), currency of payment, whether the bond can be sold or transferred and when, custody arrangements, applicable law and jurisdiction, and what happens to the bond if citizenship is refused or later revoked. Specialised press has described the instrument as a zero-interest bond; if confirmed, its present value would be significantly lower than its nominal value.

How to choose between the two routes

The choice is not only financial. Factors that we analyse with each client include: the available liquidity and its origin; the importance of recovering capital in the long term; the time horizon; the tax treatment in the country of residence; the documentation available to evidence the source of funds; and the legal risk that the programme’s basis may be modified by Congress or the courts.

Until the bond terms are published, any comparison of “cost” between the routes is incomplete. Our calculator therefore shows the amounts in separate categories and does not present the bond as a cost equivalent to the contribution.
